When
I came to Mad About Fitness four years ago, I had recently finished
treatment for breast cancer. Before cancer, I had been a runner, hiker
and bike rider and practiced yoga. I was in good shape.
When I saw my trainer, Jane Hastings,
for the first time, I was seventeen pounds underweight and had lost
all my muscle mass from my cancer treatment. I remember our first session.
Jane tested my cardio level and had me walk up and down a fitness step
for about a minute. I was shaky, sweaty and out of breath. I thought
that I would never be able to walk again without losing my breath and
that running would be out of the question. Jane helped me to change
that way of thinking. Jane’s knowledge of fitness, the body, and
how cancer affects it has helped me tremendously. She started helping
me with range of motion exercises, then gently moved to weight training,
and cardio workout.
Today I am able to take walks,
practice yoga, weight train, and on occasion, run. Jane is gentle and
nurturing, and cares about me as a person, as well as about my rehabilitation,
wellness and physical fitness. Each week, when I go to Mad About Fitness,
I walk in the door and am greeted by her with a hug. Then I get smiles
and hellos from the other trainers and clients. Mad About Fitness is
an intimate place to spend an hour working on my physical strength and
emotional growth.

I want
everyone to know what a wonderful place Mad About Fitness is. I call
it “Jane’s Safe House” because I feel it is a supportive
and positive place for anyone to make changes in his or her life.
When I first came in about three
and a half years ago I was preparing for a 3,000 miles motorcycle ride,
wanting my back to be strong so it wouldn’t hurt on the trip.
We began training all the muscle groups through resistance, weights
and core conditioning. We used the fit ball a lot. As a result, my back
never hurt on that long ride!
After the trip, I returned to
Mad About Fitness because I felt this was a safe place for me to learn
how to connect to my own body for the first time, even at fifty years
old. I was so embarrassed about being overweight and out of shape. I
subsequently lost 60 pounds.
I changed my attitude about myself at Mad About Fitness and it really
is part of me now. That ability to challenge myself, rather than retreat,
has served me well in many other areas in my life, not just in the workout
studio. Mad About Fitness is a very special place with very special
people.

Simply
stated, Mad About Fitness has changed my life from being inactive, overweight
and out of shape to being active, strong and fit. I’ve had memberships
at many local fitness clubs, but there are no better trainers or instructors
than those at Mad About Fitness. If you want to feel and look your best,
look no further for your fitness needs.

I came to Jane having partially recovered
from a six month stay in the hospital with Guillain-Barre syndrome that
had put me on the ventilator and paralyzed me up to my eyes. When I started
with Jane, I was walking with a cane and had pronounced muscle strength
and tightness issues. Through a program of strengthening my body core
as well as my arms and legs, I was able to make comparatively quick progress,
even as I was hindered by the healing process that was still necessary.
10 months removed from the hospital, I am back to playing basketball,
hiking up to ten miles, in short doing most of the things that I enjoyed
before my sickness. My confidence in Jane and her training is such that
not only do I expect to return to what I was physically able to do prior
to my sickness, I am planning to participate in a race that will exceed
anything that I have done previously. Jane additionally healed an old
lifting injury in my shoulder that had gone unaddressed for years. Her
technical know-how and constantly positive attitude have been critical
to my recovery.
